How to Avoid the Stresses of Christmas

by Tefal Team on 13 December 2016
  • When you were a kid, Christmas was probably a magical time of year when you didn’t have school, you got to watch great movies and you woke up one day to find what seemed like hundreds of presents under the tree. Sadly for us, this is very different to Christmas as an adult.

All those decorations that seemed to just spring up everywhere need to be bought and planned, the delicious feast on December 25th takes hours of preparation and the big guy in the red suit with a white beard… well, we don’t want to totally take the magic out of Christmas.

Basically, Christmas can be incredibly stressful when you’re all grown up and can’t rely on your parents to put it all together for you. However, you can make it much easier than you might think without trying to stir up some Christmas magic.

Follow our top tips this December and you could find that Christmas doesn’t need to be as difficult as you might think.

  • Make a list for everything

  • You might not think that this sounds like much of a tip, but writing individual lists for everything you need to do and buy can make life a lot easier. Rather than one long list, separate it so it looks less daunting and is easier to organise. This could also help you stick to your budget, which is always a bonus!

  • Shop early

Want to avoid the crowded shops this Christmas? It’s a good idea to get shopping early and buy everything you can well before that final week when the shops will be crowded. You can also avoid the crowds completely by doing all your shopping online, which can also ensure you get a good bargain.

  • Start prepping food

  • There’s nothing worse than having to take a trip to the supermarket a couple of days before Christmas in order to hunt down the last slightly odd looking carrots. You might think that that’s your only option when it comes to fresh vegetables, but if you buy them early, it can save you the stress. Simply prepare, blanch and freeze them so they are ready to go on Christmas day.

  • Get extras

Do you ever start panicking when someone buys you a gift and you didn’t think to get one for them? How about getting a Christmas card in the post from that great aunt twice removed who you totally forgot about? Save yourself the stress and get a few extra cards and generic presents. Things like boxes of chocolates, biscuit selections or even cosmetic sets make great gifts and are easy to pop in a gift bag if you suddenly find there’s someone you forgot to buy for.

  • Cook the turkey early

  • When it comes to cooking your Christmas dinner, the thing that always takes the longest and could throw off the rest of your timings is the turkey. Instead of putting it in the oven on Christmas morning and hoping for the best, cook it the day before and simply reheat what you need. This way, you’ll know it’s done and you won’t need to worry about it taking longer than planned.

  • Wrap as you go

There’s nothing worse than staying up until 3am wrapping presents on Christmas Eve, especially when you know your kids are going to have you up again at 5am to open them. Avoid the mass wrapping sessions and sort your presents out as you go. If there’s anything left to wrap on Christmas Eve, pop it in gift bags and get an early night.

  • Give people jobs

  • Christmas doesn’t need to be on your shoulders alone, so why not give everyone a job to do? Get your kids to decorate the tree, your partner to wrap the presents and then you can oversee and do all the little finishing touches that help to make Christmas magic. Of course, you might still end up having to do everything yourself, but it’s at least worth a try.
