PTFE, a non-stick material that our customers love
Polytetrafluoroethylene, is a polymer compound which was discovered in 1938 by the chemist Roy J. Plunkett (1910-1994). Studies carried out by public health authorities in Europe and the United States have shown the safety of PTFE. It is a substance that does not present any danger, even in the event of accidental ingestion.

Safety, effectiveness, and ease of cooking without oil
PTFE meets our quality, performance and safety requirements. At Tefal, we control all stages of production. Our coatings are our own and exclusive.

TEFAL pans are not made of TEFLON™
Historically Tefal has used TEFLON™ brand coatings for its non-stick pans. However, when Groupe SEB purchased TEFAL in 1968, it wanted to internalize the manufacturing of its own non-stick coatings to better control all stages of production.

What are the characteristics of PTFE?
The most non-stick material
Its non-stick properties allow cooking the most delicate of ingredients. It therefore does not require the addition of a fatty substance during cooking. It is a material that offers optimal cooking for more perfect recipes every day.
Tested and approved
Studies carried out by public health authorities in Europe and the United States have shown the safety of PTFE. It is a substance that does not present any danger, even in the event of accidental ingestion. Its molecules are too large to be absorbed by the body.
Resistant
Cold or hot, PTFE remains stable, including at the highest of temperatures experienced during cooking.

The PFAS family.
Non-polymers
They can pose a problem because they are bioaccumulable, this is to say they can accumulate in the human body (e.g. PFOA or PFOS)
Polymers
Like the PTFE used in our coatings, they are non-bioaccunulable, inert and considered to present no danger to human health.

PTFE, a safe material
PTFE has been recognized by health authorities such as the World Health Organization and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), as a material posing no danger to human health and compatible with food contact. Beyond its exceptional non-stick properties, it is because of this proven safety that Tefal has chosen PTFE coatings for its frying pans and saucepans.

Our Tefal non-stick coatings contain no PFOA, no lead and no cadmium*
*Stricter controls than those required by current regulations on food contact. Without PFOA in accordance with current regulations. Lead and cadmium free (Pb and Cd free) means that no intentional addition of lead and cadmium in the coatings has been made and that these metals have not been detected by tests carried out by external laboratories.
We actively monitor scientific and regulatory developments as well as the work of health agencies to offer you products that are as safe as possible. Our actions in terms of quality and safety are intrinsically based on the application of the precautionary principle, which guides the way we design and develop our innovations. This is the reason why we chose PTFE for our coatings, and why we continually follow the scientific research on the subject, which has so far been unanimous.
