About Earth Day
Every year on the 22nd of April, Earth Day is celebrated around the globe by an estimated one billion people across more than 190 countries. Its purpose is to give everyone a day to mark the importance of dedicating time, resources and energy to solving the climate crisis.
This year’s theme is ‘Invest in Our Planet’ and there are plenty of ways to get involved. Plant insect friendly flowers, sign a plastic petition, join a clean-up event near you or try some of these easy ways to take action at home:

Food for thought
Food waste is a huge problem so a simple step we can all take is to be more mindful of what we buy and how we use it up. Plan your meals and shopping to buy only what you need, the Tefal App ( is great for this) and these cast iron stew pots made from 97% recovered iron are perfect for stews, soups or a whole leg of lamb. You won’t need to buy another one anytime soon with its 20-year guarantee! And preserve food and leftovers by storing them like a pro with Masterseal food storage.
What we buy also matters so choosing locally grown, seasonal produce can help reduce the impact on the environment. Check out our guides to sustainable meat and fish.

Pass on plastics
Plastic is everywhere and while it’s useful and essential in some circumstances, single use plastic has become the scourge of our time. Swap unnecessary plastic – such as shopping bags and disposable cups, bottles and cutlery – for reusable alternatives such as bags for life and a trusty travel mug.
For unavoidable plastic, be sure to know what’s recyclable and how best to recycle it by being clear on plastics.

Wear it well
There are many ways we can help reduce the estimated 350,000 tonnes of textiles that end up in landfill each year such as considering second-hand clothes, passing on what we no longer use and hiring instead of buying outfits for special occasions.
Caring for our clothes will help get more out of them so get familiar with washing instructions and use an iron that’s gentle on fabrics. In between washes, a garment steamer will freshen things up while saving on water. Check out more sustainable fashion tips.

Grow for good
Whether you have a window box, garden or full-blown allotment, mark Earth Day with some green-fingered deeds. Plant pollinator-friendly plants and flowers such as lavender and sunflowers, choose peat-free compost and avoid synthetically made pesticides.
If you have the space, why not grow some of your own food? Our handy growing guide includes easy crops to try as well as a few yummy recipes to sample your homegrown produce!
