Ways To Save In The Kitchen

by Tefal Team on 23 September 2022
  • From shopping and swapping to cooking and keeping, spend less in the kitchen this autumn with these priceless ideas. And as well as being good for your wallet, they’ll reduce your cookprint too – win win! So, let’s get saving…

  • Shop smart

We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating – meal plans and shopping lists save money, time and food waste so don’t skip this step on the weekly food shop. With features like ‘In my fridge’ and ‘My shopping list’, our new Tefal app is a great little helper.

When you’re ready to shop, buying in bulk is a real long-term money saver. Take chicken for example: a whole bird might cost more than a pack of fillets, but you’ll get multiple meals like roast, stir fry, sandwich meat and soup for a fraction of the cost. Quids in!

  • Easy swaps

Swapping out pricier ingredients such as meat and dairy can be healthier and more planet friendly too. Try part replacement, like this beef and lentil Bolognese and include a few plant-based meals in your weekly menu.

It’s a bit of a no-brainer but seasonal eating is cheaper due to plentiful supply. Fruit and veg that are in season usually cost less so have a flexible approach to recipes throughout the year to take advantage.

There’s also a strong case for frozen fruit and veg. Not only is it usually less expensive, it’s just as nutritious, easy to throw into a meal and won’t turn to mush if it gets forgotten!

  • Think big

Bigger is also better when it comes to cooking. It takes very little extra time and energy (along with some those bulk ingredients!) to make double or triple the recipe so that you have extra portions to pop in the freezer for another day.

  • Energy saving

With the rising cost of household bills, you may well be eyeing up kitchen appliances and wondering which is the most cost effective to cook with. The good news is there are cheaper alternatives to ovens.

A slow cooker can halve the cost of oven cooking, while a microwave makes things easy for reheating and a whole range of recipes. Not only do our air fryers save up to 80% energy vs a conventional oven*, but they also heats up more quickly so can be used for shorter periods of time.

  • One pan wonders

Less can be more when it comes to saving money in the kitchen so have some delicious one pan (or tray or pot!) recipes ready to use. Go veggie, make it speedy or choose family favourites – there’s something for everyone!

  • Love your leftovers

Food waste equals money wasted too, so don’t ditch your leftovers, store and freeze them or turn them into another meal instead. Having easy meal options in the fridge and freezer will also lessen the temptation for a pricey takeaway at the end of a busy day.

That’s money saved and meals sorted – you’re welcome!
