If you’re a fan of hummus, then you’re likely to be obsessed with the creamy chickpea dip. You’d have it for lunch, dinner and all your snacks if you could. But what about dessert? That’s right, some people are not letting the conventions of sweet and savoury get in the way of their love of hummus.

Why dessert hummus?
Apart from feeding your obsession, what’s the point in making hummus into a dessert? Well, for a start, it’s a great way to make your puds healthier, while still feeling like a treat. Chickpeas are full of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals, which are great for your body.
Just like with nice cream, where people are sneaking veg into their frozen treats, dessert hummus is a good way to trick the kids into another portion of their five-a-day. Hummus has a great texture too, which lends itself to indulgent desserts.

Great for specific diets
If you’re following a vegan diet or cutting out certain food groups due to allergies or intolerances, then dessert hummus could be the answer to the question you didn’t know you were asking. It’s gluten and dairy-free. What could be better?!

Chocolate hummus
It seems that whenever you want to make something savoury sweet you just add chocolate. Well, it certainly works in this case. Swapping the garlic and lemon for cocoa powder and maple syrup in this recipe from Don’t Waste the Crumbs does the trick. When she says garbanzo beans, she means chickpeas.
You can dip anything into chocolate hummus – breadsticks, pretzels and crackers work really well. But don’t let anything hold you back, since we’ve already broken the boundaries with a sweet hummus. Let us know what you experiment with.

Vanilla hummus
When you’re thinking of classic dessert flavours, vanilla is always quick to jump to mind. It’s a good ingredient for avoiding chocolate, but still having a wonderfully sweet and familiar vibe to your dish.
Take a tip from Brooke Lark and make vanilla hummus. You can swirl in the chocolate and peanut butter like she does to ramp up the decadence too, if you like. When she says two-thirds of a cup of maple syrup read 227g, cos it’s an American recipe. Half a cup of coconut butter or peanut butter is 43g.

Cookie dough hummus
Really ramp it up to the next level with cookie dough hummus. This is so far away from the stuff we dunk our celery sticks into it’s unreal. There’s chocolate chips for goodness sake. This Fork and Beans recipe is recommended for lunchboxes and we guarantee it will confuse the healthy eating police in the dining hall.
As you can imagine, cookie dough hummus came to us from across the pond, so for half a cup of oats or chocolate chips, put in 43g. Simples. The texture is so perfect for cookie dough, you’ll wonder why we never did dessert hummus before.

The possibilities are endless
Here at Tefal, we like to push the boundaries of experimentation and think dessert hummus has so many possibilities. Why not try throwing a handful of blueberries or raspberries into your blender for a fruity hummus? Or what about green tea? That’s bound to appeal to the matcha loving crowd.
