Gooseberries are tiny little gems of goodness: not only low in calories, they also have high amounts of phenolic phytochemicals. Sounds technical, but these have been shown to help combat cancer, aging, inflammation and neurological diseases.
They may not be a traditional favourite and while some varieties are quite sour, newer and sweeter versions are popular for jams and puddings. While the gooseberry fool is perhaps the most well-known recipe, we’ve put together a few of our personal favourites to inspire you to go gooseberry!

Gluten-free gooseberry cake
We love this gluten-free Gooseberry Cake from Bthoughtful. We particularly like the fact that the gooseberries disappear into the cake batter and the results look just fantastic. Sweet and delicious.

Apple and gooseberry crumble
This Apple and Gooseberry Crumble is from one of our favourite blogs: Jam & Clotted Cream. We think this would be perfect with custard, cream or ice cream and it makes a fantastic alternative dessert that isn’t too sweet.

Gooseberry lemonade
After something simple and refreshing? Perfect for a lazy, sunny Sunday afternoon in the garden, this Gooseberry Lemonade from Lincy’s Cook Art is super-simple to make and has a beautiful twist with the added ginger and honey.

Gooseberry jam
Go traditional with gooseberry jam. The fruit itself doesn’t take too much preparation – just topping and tailing – and just three ingredients make a result that’s sweet but tart with a great texture. We particularly like this recipe from Ever So Sweet.

Gooseberry sorbet
Try something different with this Gooseberry Sorbet from Yumblog. It’s a bit of a time-investment given the five-step freezing process, but it’s worth the effort for something a little bit more unusual.
