Headline Snacks For Your Brits Night In

by Tefal Team on 16 February 2018
  • From Ginger Spice’s Union Jack dress to Jarvis Cocker stage crashing MJ himself, the annual Brit Awards have played host to some of music’s most iconic moments over the past 40 years.

Comedian Jack Whitehall will be hosting the 2018 ceremony on Wednesday 21st February, where acts including Ed Sheeran, Little Mix, Stormzy, Wolf Alice, The XX and Foo Fighters are up for prizes.

Settling down on the sofa with some snacks to watch those awkward ‘I’m fine that I didn’t win, really’ reaction shots from the stars and critique the red carpet dresses is compulsory on Brits night. But, this year, instead of grabbing your usual popcorn or sharing bag of crisps (yes, we know you never share, despite their name), we think you should inject a little creativity into your snacks.

Try to look past our punning efforts and give these recipes a go – they really are rockin’.

  • Classic rock cakes

The Brit Awards are a celebration of the nation’s best rock and pop music, so we can’t really think of a more fitting homemade snack than rock cakes. Not familiar? They’re a bit like scones and go equally well with melted butter, but they tend to lead to a great deal fewer arguments about pronunciation. We’re team ‘what’s the fastest cake in the world?’ Scone.

  • Rock cakes are a really simple bake and this recipe from Rainy Day Mum will talk you through the process step-by-step, so you can make them in plenty of time to spend the evening rockin’ with your rock cake.

  • Oatasis bites

Oasis – or Oatasis, as we’ve taken the liberty to rename them – are one of the ultimate Britpop bands, having won numerous accolades at the Brits, including the Outstanding Contribution to Music award in 2007. Decent.

  • Now, we might be playing with artistic licence here, but so was Noel Gallagher when he rhymed ‘Elsa’ with ‘Alka-Seltzer’, so we propose taking inspiration from the Oatasis boys and baking a batch of these lemon and almond butter (although you can technically use any flavours you like) oat bites from Naturally Sassy. Yes, the link might be tenuous, but they taste good, so that’s all that matters really.

  • Spice Girl samosas

The Spice Girls are arguably/undeniably (depending which side of the fence you sit on) the most iconic act to ever play at the Brits. And we think you should be inspired by their legendary status to make the ultimate spicy party snack, samosas.

But not just any old samosas, oh no. Taking The Happy Foodie’s samosa recipe and using it as a base, you could adapt the flavours to fit your favourite Spice Girl. Now, bear with us…

  • Let’s start with Ginger Spice; simply fill your samosas with beef mince and veggies flavoured with lashings of ginger. That was a straightforward one. Now for Sporty Spice, who’s highly energetic personality naturally calls for lots of protein, so switch that beef for soy mince, which is absolutely packed with the stuff. For Baby? A smaller, more mild version, of course.

What about Scary Spice? Pile on the heat, put as many chilli flakes in as you can handle and make your samosas as fiery as possible. And for Posh? Only the best will do, so it’ll have to be smoked salmon and prawns marinated in truffle oil, because that’s the poshest combo we can think of – aside from caviar, and we don’t reckon you’ve got much of that knocking around your kitchen.

If you wannabe in on the action, pick your favourite Spice Girl and make a tasty batch.

  • GingerbrEd Sheeran

Everybody’s favourite redhead crooner since Mick Hucknall, Ed Sheeran, inspires this next recipe from She Who Bakes in several ways. Firstly, he’s ginger, so gingerbread should naturally be his signature bake. Secondly, his name rhymes with bread, so we couldn’t resist the pun.

  • And you know, Ed’s great and so’s gingerbread, so it’s a lovely snack at any time – when Thinking Out Loud will inevitably be on the radio, somewhere in the world.

Bonus points for making gingerbread men that look like the guy himself – we’re thinking piped checked shirt, wispy spun sugar hair and an icing guitar.

  • Little Mix mug cakes

Not tried a mug cake yet? You’re missing out. Cake! That’s ready in three minutes! Using only a mug and a microwave and a little mix (see what we did there?!)! We got the power. Well, the microwave does.

  • You only need a few store cupboard ingredients to make a mug cake, so you can have a cake ready in minutes at any time of day or night. Table for Two has a recipe for the ‘moistest’ chocolate mug cake of all, which has a gorgeously gooey chocolatey centre. It’s so quick to make, it’s almost Black Magic.

  • Britpop

We can’t think of a better example of British pop than homemade fresh lemonade, but The Fitchen’s recipe for rhubarb and mint pink lemonade steps the Britishness up an extra notch by also incorporating rhubarb, which just so happens to be in season right now.

  • It really is an ideal accompaniment for your Brit Awards snacks – adding vodka/gin is optional.

  • Stormzy in a teacup

Stormzy has burst onto the UK music scene over the past couple of years like, well, a Stormzy in a teacup.

  • Teacup cocktails are super Instagrammable and tasty (reorder these depending on your personal priorities). Extra points if you make something tea-themed, like these raspberry and orange Earl Grey-inspired gin-based cocktails concocted by Lilinha Angel. They’ll bring the taste of summer/high tea at The Ritz to your humble abode on this cold February evening.

We did warn you that our puns would leave a lot to be desired, but we do hope that you find these ideas inspirational for your Brit Awards snacking needs. Still not convinced? Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate…
