Waffles Aren't Just For Breakfast

by Tefal Team on 31 March 2017
  • Not enough of us fully appreciate just how great waffles are. They seem to be more of an American offering that we try every now and then from the breakfast menu or pick up ready-made in the supermarket. However, making your own waffles is fairly easy and there are a lot of different options.

While you can enjoy waffles for breakfast as is traditional, there are so many more ways to eat them – beyond the family favourite frozen potato waffles. They are also simple to make, especially if you have one of our Snack Collections to hand, meaning you can make a family meal or dessert in minutes.

But what kind of waffles can you make? Here are some great ideas that could make waffles your new favourite dish:

  • Greek-style

A well known Greek dish is spanakopita, or spinach and feta pie. This is packed full of flavour and is really simple to put together, so why not make it in waffle form?

All you need to do is mix all your ingredients with mash potato and eggs to bind it all together and pop it in your waffle maker until golden brown. Whether you serve it up as a full meal or a side dish, this simple idea can totally transform how you think about waffles.

Supergolden Bakes has the full recipe, which is sure to get your mouth watering.

  • Tasty greens

It can be hard to get kids to eat their greens, but serving them up in waffle form could help convince them to at least give them a try. Rather than dishing up steamed or boiled veg and dealing with the ensuing battle to try and get them to eat at least a spoonful of peas, try turning courgette into waffles.

A Life of Geekery has a great recipe that is easy to follow and will cook delicious cheesy courgette waffles in no time at all. You can try swapping the cheese for breadcrumbs too if you want to make them a little bit healthier. Either way, they’re sure to be a big hit.

You can create veggie waffles with other ingredients too, such as sweet potato or normal potato and onion, allowing you to really mix up mealtimes.

  • Posh waffles

Who said you can’t serve waffles at a dinner party? Whether you want to provide mini appetisers or just give people something a bit different, there are plenty of ways that you can make your waffles a little bit posher.

With salmon being in season for spring, it is the perfect ingredient for adding to waffles to make them a little bit more special. Imagelicious has a great recipe for salmon and dill waffles that are sure to be a big hit at a dinner party.

Of course, you could also enjoy them for breakfast, lunch or dinner and choose from a lot of things to team them with, including scrambled egg.

  • Sweet waffles with a twist

Rather than mixing up a standard waffle batter and topping with sweet treats, you can make sure the waffle itself is perfect for your sweet tooth. Churros are a great dessert option but they can be a bit of a nightmare to make. If you have a waffle maker, though, you can still enjoy this Spanish favourite.

Chef de Home has created a great recipe for churros-inspired waffles that you simply top with cinnamon sugar. She suggests topping with cream and strawberries for a sweet finish but you can also be even more decadent by pouring chocolate sauce over them.

  • A classic

Of course, some things are good even when they’re simple and classic waffles are definitely among them. Plain waffles can be topped with almost anything, while they can also have extras added – such as chocolate, spices and cinnamon – for a little bit more flavour.

If you’ve not made waffles before, try this classic recipe from A Dash of Ginger for easy and fluffy waffles fast. If you want to make savoury waffles, simply skip on the sugar and vanilla essence.

Now all you need to do is decide which waffles to make first in your Snack Collection!
