Not only does Easter mean you get an excuse to indulge in one too many chocolate eggs, it also means your kids will be off school. While getting to spend more time with your little ones is always a great thing, it also means having to find ways to keep them occupied.
Spring is always a bit of a nightmare when it comes to this, as you can never be sure what the weather is going to do. You may love the idea of going on a family day out, but when the heavens open despite the weatherman’s assurances of sunshine, it can mean quickly trying to find something else to do.
We’ve got you covered, though, as we’ve gathered up some great Easter-themed activities that both you and the kids are sure to love – none of which involve hiding yourself away, eating all the chocolate and wishing for term time to come around again.
Here’s how to keep your little ones occupied this Easter without costing you a fortune:
-
Easter egg hunt with a twist
Everyone loves a good Easter egg hunt, but simply hiding eggs for kids to find gets a bit old if you’ve done it for a few years. There are plenty of ways you can mix things up a bit, though, helping to get everyone excited for hunting down some eggs.
You can put everyone into teams and give each team a colour. They then have to find all the eggs in that colour before the other teams to win a special prize. Alternatively, give each individual hunter a list of how many eggs they need to find in each colour so the first person to tick them all off wins.
Older kids – and adults – might enjoy a scavenger-style egg hunt that sees them given clues to the whereabouts of each egg, which is sure to take some extra time to complete.
Whichever option you go for, just be sure to hide your eggs well!

Decorate your own eggs
Tired of only having the same types of Easter eggs to choose from? Once you’ve seen one Peppa Pig chocolate egg, you’ve definitely seen them all. Save yourself having to try and find the chocolate treats your kids have chosen and from having to deal with egg-related tantrums by having your little ones decorate their own.
You can either buy ready-made chocolate eggs or grab a mould, melt some chocolate and have a go at creating your own from scratch. Once you have the basic egg, use icing pens, sweets and edible glitter to turn them into tasty creations.
You may even want to get your children to decorate some for other people if you think they can be trusted not to eat everything.
-
Cress eggs
Another activity that will help keep kids entertained while they are off school is planting cress in egg shells. This is a good one to do on the first day of the Easter holidays, as you can watch how the cress grows over the next couple of weeks.
Just wash out egg shells and place damp cotton wool in the bottom of each one. Pop in some cress seeds and you’re good to go! For an added bit of fun, don’t forget to draw faces on the egg shells so the cress looks like hair.
Once the cress is grown, you can serve it up in a sandwich for part of their lunch.

Easter Bunny tasks
Kids know they need to behave when it’s almost time for Father Christmas to pay them a visit, but what about the Easter Bunny? During the run-up to Easter, leave them tasks from the Easter Bunny that they need to complete in order for their Easter eggs to be delivered.
These can be serious things like getting them to tidy their room or eat all their vegetables, as well as fun things like play a boardgame or go to the park. On Easter Sunday, you can leave their chocolate treats out for them with a final note from the Easter Bunny.
Not only will this give them a reason to behave, it will also bring a bit more magic to the day.

Cook up a storm
Of course, you can always get your kids to help you out in the kitchen when you’re whipping up some delicious Easter treats. While their main jobs may be Chief Spoon Licker or Main Mess Maker, it’s still a great way to keep them entertained – even if you are left with extra washing up afterwards. There’s plenty of ways to get your children involved in the kitchen, especially if you’re making it safe and easy with a Cook4Me.
There are loads of great Easter recipes to try out and you can find some in our recent blog here. Just make sure there’s still some chocolate treats left for everyone else when you’re all done!
