Couples Choosing Cheese Over Traditional Wedding Cakes

  • When is a wedding cake not a cake? When it’s made up of giant wheels of cheese or pork pies towering on top of each other, apparently. So, it seems that couples like the idea of having a centrepiece to cut into on their big day, but that’s where the sense of tradition ends.

    Fruit cake is out and less sugary alternatives are in, according to new research from Waitrose. That’s right, the posh supermarket chain has seen more and more brides-to-be walking out of its shops with ‘cheese wedding cakes’.

    Waitrose has pinned the 49 per cent surge in cheese cakes on a move against sugar, but it might also be down to couples wanting their weddings to reflect them. After all, lots of people don’t really like fruit cake so why have one just for the sake of it?

  • There are so many different types of cheese available from all regions of the country, a cheese wedding cake can be customised to symbolise the couple. They might pick cheeses from the places they grew up in, where they met and where they live now to make up each of the tiers.

    A few years ago, a couple from Leicestershire having a pork pie wedding cake to reflect their hometown would have made the news. Now, you can get pork pie wedding cakes from M&S – it doesn’t get more mainstream than that.

    And why stop there? Couples who went to a pizza joint for their first date might decide that they want tiered margheritas on their wedding day instead. Some savoury wedding cakes combine different items within the same cake with pies and cheese both making an appearance.

  • Where will it end? You could have a different type of foodstuff for each tier and before you know it there’s no need to serve a wedding breakfast, because your cake is a three-course meal. A pie on the bottom, cake in the middle and cheese on top!

    Of course, not all alternative cakes have to be savoury. Cheese cakes are a good way to combine the cake and cheese themes, while macaron towers and piles of cupcakes have also become common sights at weddings.

    Even Harry and Meghan didn’t have a fruit cake at their wedding and the royals are well known for keeping up with traditions. They didn’t quite go as far as pork pies or cheese, but even lemon and elderflower is a rebellious combo when you have blue blood.
