Masterpieces On Your Plate

by Tefal Team on 23 August 2016
  • We’re big believers in the importance of breakfast here at Tefal, which is why we enlisted the help of Fresh Heather to turn toast into masterpieces on a plate. Food bloggers Heather and Hannah did an amazing job of recreating some of the most famous paintings in the world with food in order to celebrate our new breakfast range, Maison.

While you might not necessarily have the chance to turn your breakfast into art every day, our new kettle and toaster will help it to taste good and set you up for whatever you need to face during the day.

You can see more of the amazing work that Fresh Heather produced here, while we’ve got a few more favourites that look too good to eat:

  • Ambassadeurs - Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec

Known for his paintings depicting those working at Paris’ famous Moulin Rouge and the bohemian lifestyle of Montmartre, Toulouse-Lautrec created thousands of pieces of art in less than 20 years.

His Ambassadeurs painting was actually created as a poster to advertise an event starring the singer Aristide Bruant at the Ambassadeurs nightclub in Paris in 1892. Bruant was a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec and asked him to design the poster for the show.

Unfortunately, the director of the cabaret show didn’t like the poster as it was too dramatic and was painted in a style that was too bold. Luckily for Toulouse-Lautrec, Bruant dug his heels in and said he wouldn’t perform unless the poster was used so it ended up being displayed outside and inside the theatre.

While the poster was originally painted, Hannah and Heather managed to recreate it using fruit and cereal, which we think is much more delicious!

  • Mona Lisa - Leonardo da Vinci

Even if you aren’t much of an art buff, you’d definitely be able to pick the Mona Lisa out of a lineup. This is one of the most famous pictures on the planet so we had to see how it would look on toast.

It’s believed that the Mona Lisa is a painting of Lisa Gherardini, who was the wife of a Florentine merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. This would make sense as the alternative title of the painting is La Gioconda.

However, the portrait is shrouded in mystery as da Vinci didn’t give it to Giocondo once it was finished. Instead, he took it with him to France where it ended up in the royal collection of Francois I. In fact, it still isn’t clear who the sitter really was so we have no way of knowing if the painting is of Lisa Gherardini.

While we probably won’t ever know the full history of the Mona Lisa, her small smile is still hugely iconic, even when made out of food and served up for breakfast.

  • The Great Wave - Katsushika Hokusai

Just one of the images that make up the 36 Views of Mount Fuji collection, the Great Wave – also known as Under the Wave off Kanagawa – has been cited as the inspiration for a number of other great paintings.

Rather than being painted like many of the pieces our toast art is based on, the Great Wave is a woodblock print, as is the rest of the collection. It was created by Hokusai between 1830 and 1832 and became famous as it managed to make the largest mountain in Japan look tiny in comparison to the water.

While Hokusai became famous for his landscapes, we think this one is something a bit special, especially when it is made out jam, icing, peanut butter and chia seeds. This is definitely one piece of art that looks far too good to eat.

  • Art of Breakfast

Want to see more amazing toast art? We recently put together the Tefal Pop-Up Toast Gallery at Old Street station in London to show off the amazing toast art to commuters, who could get a free breakfast prepared in our Maison toaster while they browsed the gallery. Take a look below for footage from the event.
