Hygge Up Your Home This Autumn

  • Have the hygge, lykke and lagom trends all passed you by? Or does it sound like we’re talking Dutch to you? Try Danish or Swedish, because it’s these countries we have to thank for the squishy lifestyle trends that mean it’s okay to curl up on the sofa with a chunky knit blanket and a scented candle.

Autumn is the perfect time to indulge in these Scandi practices since they were pretty much invented to go with dark nights and colder weather. Some people go all out practically redesigning their home to make it more hygge, but there are loads of little things you can do to make it happen on a smaller scale.

  • Dig in to a one-pot supper

Hygge is all about coziness and contentment, which has to start with a full tummy. Don’t let it be a stress though otherwise you’ll spoil the hygge before you’ve even begun. Whip up your favourite comfort food in the Cook4Me in less than 15 minutes, leaving you loads of time to get on with the other hygge must-dos.

  • Soak in a steamy bath

Not much beats a hot bath for relaxing, but only if it’s done right. Make sure that your bathroom is clean and uncluttered, so that your mind can wander away from all the chores you’re not getting done. Light some candles, add some creamy bubble bath and make sure there’s a fresh white towel waiting for you when you get out.

  • Get stuck into a book

We’re not talking about a text book for that extra course you’re taking after work or The Gruffalo’s Child for the seven millionth time, but something you really want to read. It might be that novel with the fascinating synopsis that’s been sat by the bed since last Christmas or an autobiography by someone you admire. The same things apply when taking a hygge bath – make sure your space is clutter-free and relaxing.

  • Phones off please!

This might be a huge wrench, but throw your phone away. Okay, that’s a bit drastic, but perhaps you need to turn it off or put it in another room for an hour or so. This will help you to push away the outside pressures and concentrate on your own wellbeing. You’ll see that the world didn’t end when you weren’t aimlessly scrolling through Instagram.

  • Light some candles

Candles don’t have to be saved for when you’re having a bath. They’re a good way to help you feel more calm and generally hygge in your house. Turn down the lights – so you can’t see any mess – and burn a candle with a delicious smell that makes you feel warm and cozy at home.

  • Wear comfy pajamas

Having an early night is a good way to feel hygge this autumn, but the next best thing to sliding in between warm sheets is chucking your PJs on. Soft, loose-fitting fabric in fun designs are a great way to make you feel more relaxed. Invest in some thick wool socks and a really wooly dressing gown or oversized jumper to get the full effect.
