What does summer taste like to you? It’s surely got to be a smooth, creamy Mr Whippy, expertly squeezed from that little magic machine into a crispy wafer cone, drizzled with slightly luminous pink raspberry sauce and topped with a crumbly Cadbury Flake, yes? We’re drooling just thinking about it.
So, imagine our surprise at finding the classic 99 cone is not actually one of Britons’ official favourite ice creams. Yes, shocked face indeed.
YouGov has carried out arguably the most important poll of the year so far, finding that the nation’s favourite ice cream is in fact the Magnum, which won 28 per cent of the overall vote – more than three times as much as the next lollies on the list, the fabulous Fab and the scrumptious Solero, which both won eight per cent of the vote.

Magnums were particularly popular among over-65s, with 42 per cent of their votes coming from this age group, compared to just 12 per cent from 18 to 24-year-olds. Meanwhile, Fabs were most popular among over-50s, winning 11 per cent of this age group’s vote, compared to just one per cent of over-65s. But can you ever be too old or sprinkle-covered chocolate atop flavoured ice on a stick? We think not.
Feasts were next on the list with six per cent of the total vote, followed by Calippos (five per cent), the humble orange lolly (three per cent) and the Cornetto (also three per cent). We’re sorry, but that chocolate bit at the bottom of a Cornetto is worth much more than an orange lolly alone, surely?
Fruit Pastille lollies also got three per cent of the vote, and the Mivvi rounded off the top ten with two per cent. We must confess to having to Google what a Mivvi is – a bit like a Solero, apparently, with a strawberry outside and a pineapple centre. Sounds good.
However, we were flabbergasted to see that the magnificent Nobbly Bobbly only amassed a measly one per cent of the overall vote. How do more people love this so-called Mivvi than the mighty Nobbly Bobbly?! Sigh.

Well, if all this talk of ice cream has got you hankering for one and you can’t hear the jingle of the ice cream van playing Greensleeves (what is it with ice cream van drivers and their love for 16th century tunes?!) approaching, have a go at making your own using the sorbet function on your Tefal Blender.
Try out this healthy pineapple sorbet recipe from The Girl Who Ate Everything to get yourself started, or treat yourself with some homemade indulgent salted caramel ice cream courtesy of this recipe from The Crazy Kitchen.
As for us, we’re off to buy as many Nobbly Bobblys as we can get our hands on, to try to soothe their feelings as best as we can. We still love you and think you’re the best, don’t worry…
