Pass The Salt, Apricot

  • Food is the greatest love of your life, right? But what about when a baby comes along? Do you have to replace your love of good grub with love for your little one? ‘You can have it all’, the parenting manuals claim, but is that really true when you’re trying to settle the baby and eat your dinner at the same time? Not necessarily, unfortunately.

So why not pay tribute to your love of a hot meal or your love of cooking a meal without it burning when the baby starts crying by naming them after one of your favourite ingredients?

This is currently a big trend among foodie parents, apparently. According to the Babycentre website, names inspired by a love of food are set to be one of the big baby name trends of 2018.

  • For little girls, names like Clementine, Saffron, Olive and Rosemary are tipped to be hot this year. But they’re not so unusual, right? Well, what about Brie, Apricot, Peaches and Plum; no, not the new Christmas cheese selection from Tesco, but other apparently popular baby girl names of the moment.

Coco, Honey, Cherry, Ginger and Berry were also up there on the foodie girls’ names list, while the boys’ list featured some more traditional food-related names like Basil, Angus and Mac, as well as a few more unusual choices.

How many Caesars were there in your class at school?! Well, apparently the classic salad is so popular parents are increasingly naming their sons after it, while Herb, Rye, Chip, Kale and even Fig (?!) are also rising in the rankings.

  • Without wanting to sound all Katie Hopkins, we can’t help but worry that kids named after an artisan type of bread might be better thought of in life than their classmates named after fried potatoes.

If you don’t want to name your little one after a cooking ingredient, then Nameberry suggests going for a more traditional choice instead, with olden days-esque names like Agatha, Bessie, Ida, Polly, Ned, Dudley and Waldo all making an apparent comeback in 2018.

But we have to admit we like the idea of looking in the fruit bowl or spice cupboard for some naming inspo. Just imagine how Banana Jones would sound on the register at school. Or Oregano Smith. Or Avocado Williams. Ok, we’ll stop now.
