Save Food From the Bin With the Food Sniffer

by Tefal Team on 25 November 2016
  • No one wants to waste food, but if we can’t tell if something is still okay to eat, more often than not, it goes in the bin. The ‘it’s better safe than sorry’ mentality protects families from illness, but it can mean that you’ve thrown out perfectly good ingredients, wasting money as well as the contents of your fridge.

While it’s easy to tell when some food is well past edible – if your bread has started to turn a lovely shade of green, it’s safe to say you shouldn’t make a sandwich – some other ingredients aren’t so easy to figure out.

  • A new piece of tech is hoping to take the guesswork out of your kitchen when it comes to working out what is still okay to eat. The ‘Food Sniffer’ uses a number of sensors to detect whether meat and fish are fresh, spoiling or fit for the bin, meaning you can save your own nose and get a definitive answer.

It’s essentially a scanner that connects to your phone via an app. You point it at the food you want to test and press a button, which then sends the reading to your phone. It assesses things like temperature, ammonia levels and humidity, which are all indicators of a food’s freshness.

Your app allows you to easily see what is going on with your food so you can make a decision on what to do with it, helping to keep your family healthy.

  • It has a number of different settings, depending on what you want to test, including beef, chicken, seafood, lamb and fish, all of which can be a bit misleading when it comes to working out what is still edible.

What’s really great about the Food Sniffer is that you don’t need to rely on your own nose and use by dates, which can be inaccurate. You’re able to see if you should pop something in your freezer for another day and whether it’s still okay even though the label says it should have been used by yesterday.

If you want to save money on fresh food, this nifty little device could help you do just that.
