Britain Keeping Korma And Carrying On

by Tefal Team on 16 October 2017
  • National Curry Week may be over, but we’re not ready to stop obsessing over Indian food just yet. Yet after seven days of drooling over spicy, flavoursome dishes, we were a little surprised to learn that the nation’s favourite curry is apparently a korma. Have we taught you nothing about the beauty of spices this past week?!

A survey carried out by Just Eat found that a korma is the curry Brits are most likely to order, with 17 per cent naming this their favourite. Previously, tikka masala has always had the UK’s heart, but it was knocked into second place, with 16 per cent of the vote.

  • This suggests we’re increasingly shying away from hot and spicy when it comes to curries, instead favouring milder, creamier dishes. These can still be packed with flavour, just without the heat. And you know what they say, if you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen and order a korma to be delivered … something like that anyway.

The next highest-ranking curries reassure us a little though. While the majority might not be brave enough to try anything other than a mild korma, 11 per cent are happy handling a madras, nine per cent love a jalfrezi and eight per cent always go for the spiciest option of all, the mighty vindaloo.

  • Meanwhile, seven per cent like a balti, six per cent would pick a bhuna and four per cent like dopiaza best.

At the bottom of the list in ninth place is saag, which is the favourite of just two per cent of Brits, while rogan josh comes in last with only one per cent of the vote.

So what do these findings show us about the nation’s tastebuds? Well, some like it hot, and some like it mild. While korma might come out on top, the mildest option accounts for just 17 per cent of the vote overall, with the remaining 83 per cent taken up by much spicier dishes, so we can’t be too scathing about people’s favourites.

  • If you like korma and are happy sticking with what you know, that’s fine. But if you think you can handle a few more chillis on the spice-o-meter, up the ante and try a tikka masala or a balti next time you’re ordering an Indian.

Of course, if you make your own curry at home using our Tefal Madras Collection cookware, you can keep on top of exactly how much spice – and yoghurt to cool your mouth down! – goes into it.
