It’s Pie Week. No, not a GBBO challenge (although the Great Celebrity Bake Off is back on telly soon – yay!) We’re talking British Pie Week, a national celebration of all stuffed-pastry baked goodies.
We’re getting into the spirit of it by sharing a pie’s-the-limit selection of recipes to see you through the week. But first we need to address a burning question – just what classifies as a pie?

Pie or lie
The British Pie Awards say pie is ‘a filling wholly encased in pastry and baked’. A recent petition even demanded to ‘make wrongly describing a casserole with a pastry lid as a pie a criminal offence’ – yikes! Wonder what they’d make of GBBO David’s lidless pies.
That said, for the purposes of this blog we’re going for a more relaxed definition as, quite frankly, the recipes are just too darn delicious. #sorrynotsorry. So let’s get stuck into a week full of pies…

Monday’s a classic
Start British Pie Week off strong with a trad chicken pie. Or bend the pie rules with this chicken pot pie; just 5 ingredients, a good pan and you’re in business.
Breakfast of cham-pie-ons Tuesday
Salivating for your next pie fix? Then dive right into this breakfast pie, a filled-pastry feast that’s good any time of the day. Any leftovers will make a good lunch for tomorrow.
Bake up a tasty veggie alternative in the form of this mushroom, spinach and feta pie or this cheesy baked bean pie.

Full flavour Wednesday
Taking ins-pie-ration from our favourite baking show, we just had to include this beaut of a spice-filled pie from series 8’s loveable Liam. If time’s not on your side, get spicy with this easy peasy Bombay potato and spinach pie instead.
Sing it with me Thursday
How does the song go? ‘When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie…’ Turns out pizza pie is real and well worth trying, like this Naples inspired recipe – now that’s amore.
This banoffee apple pie is so good we reckon it’s worthy of a song too. Hmm, what rhymes with caramel sauce?

Friday, pie day
What’s a mathematician’s favourite food? Pi. Bad joke but this spectacular fish pie recipe really adds up. That secret layer of mushy peas – genius.
While we’re at it, let’s count in these lamb and chickpea hand pies with turmeric-tinged pastry too.
Pork-full Saturday
Pork pies are the pinnacle of British pie-ness so have a go at making your very own. Go the whole hog with this traditional hot water crust pastry version or keep it simple with these yummy mini pork and chorizo picnic pies.
Super pie Sunday
Stoke your excitement for Great Celebrity Bake Off with Paul Hollywood’s raised game pie, a blinder of a Sunday lunch centrepiece. Or for an actual Sunday lunch pie, try this.
And to round off an amazing pie-filled week, it has to be this ultimate apple pie. A simple but sublime way to pie heaven.
