Avoid Food Waste and Save £700

  • The amount of food that get’s thrown out every day in the UK is massive. If it isn’t you throwing out a few things that are past their best then it’s supermarkets getting rid of tonnes of food, some of which could still be eaten.

While many of the leading food retailers in Britain have pledged to reduce the amount of food they waste by 20 per cent by 2025, we aren’t doing so well in our own homes. This is why just under 50 per cent of the food that is thrown away in the UK comes from homes.

According to the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign, over half of the seven million tonnes of food and drink that goes into our bins on a yearly basis could still be eaten. Not only does this mean that you’re sending a lot of stuff off to landfill that could still be okay, it also means you’re effectively throwing money away – in fact, you’re throwing away around £700 a year!

As well as paying attention to use by dates instead of relying on best before dates on food packaging, what else can you do to cut down on food waste?
